I'm actually surpriised that bottom fermented beers are only 90% China now brews nearly 25% of world beer production (49 billion liters) and I'd be surprised if more than a few percentage points are top fermented. US production is about half of China's (23 billion liters) and "craft beer" in the US is still only about 8% according to the Brewers Association -- while not a perfect measure of top fermented beers I'd guess it's close. Brasil is third with just overt half of US production (13 billion liters). Again, the vast majority bottom fermented. Russia is fourth with nearly 10 billion liters. Again, the vast majority bottom fermented. Germany is fifth with 9.5 billion liters. I couldn't find any numbers on wheat beer production but one report said it is about 1/3 of the market in Bavariaa and 10% in the rest of Germany. So a WAG of 70% bottom fermented? Mexico is sixth with 8 million liters. Again, the vast majority bottom fermented. The UK is eighth (after Japan) with just over 4 billion liters. The reports I saw said lager was about half of UK consumption but I didn't see figures for production (some imports, I'm sure). Belgium is 23rd with 1.8 billion liters. I couldn't find data on top vs bottom fermented but Stella and Jupiler hold about half the market. |
