Just had a quick scan of Jezza's guide. My, oh my, how things have changed. I lived in London for nearly 8 years in total, in 3 spells (1969 - 74, 1977 - 79 & 88 - 89), including spells in Paddington, Kew, Richmond, Southfields, Putney and Amersham (end of the Metro line). We spent a good lot of time in pubs - as you might guess! In my early bachelor days, we regularly used to do the Circle line crawl (a half in the nearest pub to selected stations on the line - there are 36 and no one managed all of them. They including the only 'underground' station with a bar on the platform - now closed but any guesses?). I helped Tim Richards research his book 'Pubs of the City of London' - I think the book that opened people's eyes to the delights of the town. In fact, one of the only pubs that I recognise from the guide is 'Ye Olde Mitre' - a superb place and a regular in our forays into the City. Apart from that, virtually nothing. If accommodation wasn't so expensive now (and beer likewise), I would love to try a few of the pubs recommended but guess will have to make do with good old Eschawo and Bamberg! |
