I was getting at the idea that Americans have been using the term to denote non-Budweiser/Miller/Coors sorts of industrial maize/rice beers for a long time now, which would certainly include traditional European beers like Kellerbier and Hefeweizen (as well as mild and bitter)...but Europeans seem to use it to mean "post-1980's American-microbrewery-style beer", and consider traditional European beer styles to *not* be "craft" beer. Which is just ridiculous. This confusion is all the more reason to NOT use the term at all, since it was a marketing gimmick from microbrewery-wannabes who had their beer brewed at large industrial operations under contract, so they couldn't call them "microbrewed" beer. IOW; a mild from an American brewery is "craft" where it's a post-80's discovery, but not from Robinson's in England where it's traditional, at least to (some) Europeans. The term's irritated me for 20 years now. |
