All those years of Robinsons yeast have numbed your tongue! Or all the years of bland Guinness make you happy to have anything with any flavour at all? Speaking of English beer, I got a box of beer from someone way up near the Dutch border the other day. In it was a litre of Schumacher 1838, some sort of anniversary (brewery's founding?) edition of stronger, hoppier Altbier. Bloody fine it was, too. First sips brought me right back to my first ever taste of ...wait for it... Rogue St. Rogue Red ale (roasty malts make it red, Chinook & Centennial make it bitter, not as citric as it sounds though) back in 1992. And that was not in Oregon, where Rogue is from, but at a bar in Minneapolis, coincidentally named "Rogue". (So they had Rogue beer on.) Then as it warmed, it reminded me of an ESB, though maybe not specifically Fuller's. |
