| Enjoyed a splendid, if short, visit to Bamberg last weekend to celebrate my 40th birthday with some friends - many of whom had not tasted Franconian beer before. Definite highlights were the special Lent beers I'd never had before - both the Schlenkerla Fastenbier and Mahrs' Weisse Bock were excellent. Managed to bring some of the latter back after stretching my German language skills to deal with buying bottles from the brewery office! The whole weekend was enhanced by surprisingly beautiful weather, although only Spezial Keller had taken advantage and opened their outside space for the ocassion (albeit without the staff to enable table service). Also great to meet up with Fred very briefly in Schlenkerla's Schwemme. Afraid I was too busy enjoying the Fastenbier to notice they'd put up a new barrel of Maerzen ;) Looking forward to going back very soon :) |
