| At least, I assume that's all it's about, is how he's a Yank who's come, learnt to brew Bavarian beer properly (Braumeister), and is now causing rending of garments and wailing, just like we're seeing a bit of in this thread, because he's now brewing murky pale ales with Hefeweizen yeast. (Haven't read it, don't think I will...if that's not the gist, ignore this post.) If there are 1200 or more breweries in Germany, and most of them make ridiculously bland, cheapened-down cooking lager, can't we maybe allow just a couple, maybe even 3 or 4, to brew something like a good pale ale? Just to be fair, let's wail and moan about any potential English breweries who brew a good Kellerbier. Because none of you Engländer want to have a good, affordable Kellerbier available near you, right? Telling Yanks to stick to their traditional styles is a bit trickier, and would kind of mean saying brewers of German descent may only brew pre-prohibition lager or Dampfbier, and brewers of English extraction may only brew molasses porter. Just a bit of hyperbole from me, to celebrate returning to Franken after my longest absence in nearly a decade: we spent the last two weeks in Utrecht. I wish German brewers could brew like Kompaan make their 70 -- a beautiful, crisp, well-hopped Pils. Not ridiculously over-hopped and too strong like Victory's Prima, just really, really well made. Found some lovely Dutch and Belgian beer, and some...meh. Nearly all ridiculously over-strong though. Put on 1.8 kg in two weeks of eating out every night (and most lunches) and indulging in too much ridiculously over-strong beer. |
