Scotland makes some of the finest ales in the world, but getting hold of them isn't easy. In Glasgow (where I live) there are really only a handful of bars specialising in serving them well. My favourite is Bon Accord, which at any given time has ten extremely well kept pumps of English/Scottish ale and a fine selection from Europe in the fridges, including Augustiner and Andechs, as well as one of the biggest selections of single malt whisky in the UK, if not the world. Edinburgh is better served for beer bars, where most decent bars will have a pump or two serving something decent and local. It has to be said though that the Scots taste seems to be more for artificial chemical laden "lager" which bears no reseblence to the lager we enjoy in Franconia. Brewdog are leading the charge of "trendier" "craft breweries" and although their product can be good, they also make a lot of what I call "stunt beer" - all hop and nothing else - there's altogether too high a marketing level for me, and the prices are high. Fyne Ales is fantastic. If anyone was interested they do run a festival called Fyne Fest once a year at their beautiful brewery site at the top of Loch Fyne, near Inveraray.
