| i did it! G-O is even more unique than Neder :P the first thing that hit me as i opened the door was the heat. really powerful heat coming from the beautiful Kachelofen (immediately to the left of the door). got there 15 mins before opening time but came inside anyway. one man sat next to the Kachelofen, one table in the corner was full, all other the tables had reserved signs. the whole room suddenly fell silent and everyone looked towards the door where i was standing. i said 'Guten Abend' and everyone greeted me back. it sounded really loud when they said 'Guten Abend' back as the room was silent. bloke (not a pensioner this time) at the Stammtisch sat there like the king, with a Stammgast look on his face. a big wooden Stammtisch sign on the Kachelofen in case you don't know. an even bigger wooden sign in local dialect that read something along the line of 'only for those who sit here from 6-9' (someone translated it for me shortly after). waitress was visibly disappointed that we didn't have a reservation but kindly rearranged the cushions and told us to sit at this table. apparently this was the 'outcasts' table'. the benches are more like old sofas, an extra little makeshift table is added next to it with extra old chairs to accomodate more unexpected outcasts. only 15 mins or so after we sat down and ordered our beer more and more regulars arrived and the Stammtisch was full. everyone else also arrived. 4 people walked round but returned to our table and were relieved to hear it was just the 2 of us, that meant they could share the table with us. the beer choices were only big or small, the one and only beer on tap was Festbock. as for food you could only have either Schnitzel or Vesper (both were good). some of the regulars who came to the tap to settle their bills all asked us how we knew about this place and how the beer was (they were somewhat concerned perhaps the Festbock was a bit too strong for me). our table is just next to the tap on the other side of the path to the kitchen, we had full view of the Kachelofen and all the regulars (all pensioners). quite a few people came to our table just to look at me!?!?! lol... a woman in group of 4 who shared our table spoke perfect English and innitiated a conversation that lasted the entire visit. they looked at me curiously and talked about me! as the conversation went on they were so amazed to learn things about our beer/food travels in DE. even the mother told her to translate that to us. when i told them i found G-O beer in Rothenburg quite by chance they became interested and asked if the place was next to this shop and opposite that shop, to which i answered yes. the daughter (good English speaker) said she was one of the business partners of that place where i found the Helles vom Fass. i asked some questions about G-O brauerei and she answered them all. she's been a regular for 4 years now and she's allowed to add woods to the Kachelofen. but even then every time she has problem finding a seat as it's busy like this every evening. wow, glad i made it there. now i can say that it is the first time i felt truly out of place in a pub, but the 'tension' was more from curiousity rather than something unpleasant. stolen glances and kind smiles in our direction until the moment we left. last look was when i walked through the whole room in front of everyone to get to the door. even the taxi driver (the same one who took us here) asked about the pub, the beer and how we even heard about the place. he got half a crate of beer to go. btw, who was the beautiful waitress that Jürgen spoke of? maybe she doesn't work there anymore :( ok, that's all i can remember for now. thanks everyone here for your suggestions, knowledge and discoveries! zum Wolh! |
