Short report on The Leading Beers, Amberg, 2-3 nov. 2013 Visited on the second day, sunday 3rd. For the entry fee of € 15 you got a tasting glass and eight coupons, one for a non-alcoholic drink, one for some chocolate (!) and six for beer samples. There were various sets of beer coupons; as I was with a friend, we started out with 12 different coupons. More beers could be had for The leading beers crown corks, 1 euro each. Almost every beer would set you back one crown cork, seldom two, but we both got a few free samples as well. Serving size was 0,1 litre. About 75 % of the breweries present were traditional breweries from the Oberpfalz and other Bavarian regions, but most of them had brought something special beside their standard offerings, including a few special brews for the festival. The other breweries were of the more experimental type (I won't use the c-word), some small independent ones, others affiliated to larger breweries. I had no problem whatsoever to find really interesting and tasty beers. In the afternoon there were several lectures and tutored tastings. Each cost 4 euros, a bargain in most cases. For instance 4 beers with 4 cheeses, or 5 different beers from small Austrian brewers. For me this was time and money well spent, and my companion thought likewise. The festival is intended to travel, so if there is another edition next year, it will probably not be in Amberg. A more extensive report from the journey which included the visit to the festival is published on my blog, but of course that's in Dutch: http://bierentrein.wordpress.com/2013/11/07/amberg-en-bamberg/ |
