| And Ireland - amazingly, the first country in Europe to introduce a smoking ban. On health and safety grounds for staff but great for me who 'had' to spend 3 hours every Saturday night in a bar room 15' x 12' full of smokers and only Guinness to drink. Used to take out the fiddle on the Sunday morning just to clear away the residual smoke - and when I played the concertina...! Thousands of poubs have closed since the ban but that is more down to the fact that you can buy a can of beer in a supermarket for less than half the pub price - and the quality is more or less the same. Plus the tightening of drink driving rules, which is the right thing to do but causes havoc in the rural areas where there is no public transport, few taxis and people who don't go out until 11 pm! |
