Barry, If you are travelling to Salzburg from the north as I presume you will, a number of stops on the RE train offer some interesting beer options. Off the top of my head as places I have visited, Rosenheim has 2 breweries the large Auerhahn (sp) you can take or leave but the smaller Flotzinger more interesting. Traunstein has 3 breweries, the large Hofbrauhaus Traunstein, the good modern Snitzelbaumer and the medium sized Wochinger. Freilassing is the last town before Salburg (7 minutes away) and has a pretty good wheat beer brewery, the imaginatively named Weissbrau. You can also get to Rosenheim from Tegernsee I think, worth a visit for it's beautiful scenery and excellent brewery.
