I should clarify that 35 is perfect when swimming in lakes... but its also fine by me anytime given the previous summers we've had in Europe. I think my enjoyment of the marzen comes from my quintessentially British taste buds, it is very much like an English style real ale in mouthful due to the gravity dispense. Coming from the pacific nw I'm guessing you would be the opposite but as you say you would be better prepared now. I would rank it amongst my favorite beers in Germany/austria. If the vast majority of franconian breweries/pubs stopped injecting unnecessary gas into their beer and served it from the barrel as it should be I imagine the augustiner marzen would be more mainstream. There is a pub just down from augustiner that serves the beer under gas - a great place to compare the difference which is marked. Of course the wonderful atmosphere contributes to the beer, and its the simplicity that I like so I wouldn't expect, for example, a high score on rate beer but nor would I want it to (and nor do I, or I'm sure augustiner care) beer like that deserves more. Happy to offer more info on berchtesgaden if needed. |
