"So, why do the breweries seem intent on driving people out of the pubs?" Is it the breweries that are driving people out of the pubs? I thought it had more to do with the cost of running a pub itself including taxation applied to beer served in the pub. Are breweries charging more for beer that they sell to a pub vs. a supermarket? Just curious. "I would argue (and the Eschawo experience confirms my view) that people actually like going to pubs and many would prefer to go out and meet other people than stay at home." No question about that. On my last visit to Westport, Co. Mayo there we stopped in one afternoon at a small, old pub in the center and there were a bunch of elderly locals sitting at a table playing cards and drinking coffee. They weren't drinking pints and I even heard a few complaints from them about the price of a pint. So the bartender was pouring them coffee and slipping a little something extra into the cup. I'm sure they would have rather had a pint though but it was too expensive. |
