Ich: "Unfortunately, the Weller Bier hasn't impressed: sweeter and than even Kitzmann, and just as bland." Well, that was a year or so ago. Yesterday's sampling at the little Altstadtmarktfest that's on this weekend to instill enthusiasm in the impending renovation work revealed two things. First, they've improved the "3x11" Hell, and second, they're doing a very drinkable Dunkel in the form of "Archivrat", to commemorate the city's archives, archivists, or summat. At 5.2%, it's much too strong, of course, but it's *very* nice and malty, quite impressive. It features malt from Steinbach's maltings/Mälzerei and yeast from Kitzmann to give a sort of Erlanger hommage, and Tettnanger hops to commemorate Herrn Weller's birthplace in Baden-Württemberg. (Water from Zeil am Main isn't mentioned in the flyer about the project.) < http://www.erlanger.de/?p=1517 > says it was brewed up at the antique Kommunbrauhaus in Junkersdorf! I believe that must've been the first batch, as it was also 5.6%, whereas the current stuff is 5.2%. But I'll ask about this when we go back today, after a pop-round to the Röckenhofer Kerwa. (Jürgen, Gerhard, Danny, see you there?) They want to raise 600k € for the brewpub/Gasthausbrauerei, which they hope to open in 2014. It is indeed the former Schlecker location...seems a bit small to me, but we'll see. Anyone (well, anyone with a German bank account?) can become a share-holding member, too. |
