In more recent times, modern German actually has borrowed from other languages (particularly English), and over the longer term, it has borrowed from the likes of Latin as well. Other languages too; in the eastern bit that includes Thuringia, Saxony, et al, look at menus that often feature "soljanka," a sort of sweet-and-sour soup or stew. Slavic word origin, introduced from Russia and Poland. Same with many place names, including neighborhoods in Berlin (Pankow, Treptow, etc), not to mention an entire Slavic culture, the Sorbians, that live in their own region of eastern Germany. |
