Quite right, when Heineken got hold of Beamish, it closed the brewery and transferred production to the Murphy brewery, which they also owned. I didn't know this but, at that point, they stopped exporting Beamish, supposedly 'concentrating on the domestic market'. If this is the case, they are lousy at marketing because there is no sign of any increased availability of either Murphy or Beamish products. More likely, they simply decided not to bother to much with stout as its general market share is declining in favour of light beers, particularly lager types, which seems to be a fairly universal phenomenon. There is an interesting article on sales of Beamish in Madrid (http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/ididaueyey/), which mirrors the situation in Germany. I made the business plan available simply to indicate that running a pub is a serious business. In some ways, running a small pub is harder work than running a big pub because you have to do everything yourself. Don't know anything about The Guard, as I only watch B&W films! Brendan Gleeson was invited to open a small film studio next to me (since closed) a few years ago. Self and a few other local musicians, none of whom had any idea who BG was, but were told that he played the fiddle, were invited to play a few tunes. Unfortunately, free beer was provided and, by the time the bold Brendan arrived, we were all pretty langered. But, of course, he'd seen all that before, so he just joined in the chaos. Decent bloke but didn't like the only film I've seen him in because Daisy's pub didn't get a mention. Not that I could see, anyway. |
