Erm...that was more intended to help any Germans who might not know (or have forgotten) the way we say "to have something done (by someone)", not to help you Engländer learn the German way! I've had to go over that particular piece of grammar often and regularly. The word-for-word translation of how Germans say that is "I will something (by someone) do let". So they have to practice not only the different word we use ('have' instead of 'let'), but also that it's a passive form in English ('done' instead of 'do') and the word order is not the quirky German way. And don't fret about your not knowing this -- it's not really entry level German either! Took me a while to get the hang of it. Past tense conjunctive modal verb clauses are also fun. "I should not have drunk so much Bockbier last night" translates word-for-word to "I häd last night not so much Bockbier drink shall." Yoda was clearly a German philosopher. |
