There is a good language school in Bamberg -- www.learn-german.com My guess is some self instruction (like Rosetta Stone) followed by a month of classes would give you a good foundation. The school used to be literally next door to Fässla (which is how I found them) but is now on the other side of the Ketternbrücke in Hauptwachstrasse. I would also check your local colleges (especially community colleges) for classes.
