Brrr... hope the weather warms up soon; very chilly for keller visits (just checked on wetter.com which says much better morgen and next week - but it does say that it is 14C here now, which it certainly isn't). So took the chance to visit the stamtisch spiritual home of Bamberg (my view anyway). Is it just my imagination but is the old town looking a bit down at heel? Possibly just because of the crowds but it was very litter strewn. Anyway, Schlenkerla was just as usual and not too crowded. Sat in Schwemm and had a seidla, which was as good as ever - IMHO a real classic, quite unmatched by anything of its type. Love the Schwemm, never fail to get into conversation, this time with a couple from Bamberg. But, on a tightish schedule, so straight across to Mahrs, not stopping enroute, mainly because Spezial 'urlaub'. Decided, regretfully, to give Keesmann a miss and hit the hatch for 'a U'. IMHO (again) this is another classic and no dreaded CO2! Not sure why you don't like this Nick, ok not particularly hoppy but a great combination of different flavours. And the best news? It reminds me of a bottom fermented version of some of the bitter we used to have in Manchester. Can't tell you exactly why, just something in the taste (and look) stirs a few memories. Prompted by Nick, decided to head out to Witzgall Schlammersdorf. Silly me, did not really take care reading this board because we had to ring Nick for directions to the keller and it's so easy! Settled down for our picnic with a couple of seidlas of kellerbier but... it is sooooo... gassy! J. only managed to drink half of hers and I couldn't finish it. Added to this, sitting in the wood was pretty cold so we headed for the village. The pub had all the signs of being closed but we persevered and found a way in. Very polite service and a sheltered area at the back to sit in. I had read all the reviews on this site and, to be honest, I was a little disappointed. Yes, the vollbier was a big improvement on the aforementioned kellerbier but, again, a lot of gas. It was most definitely filtered and came with a head like a Mr. Whippy ice cream (reference probably only for British readers but sure everyone can imagine). It was not a patch on the vollbier from Eichorn in Forchheim, perhaps because we could actually taste the latter. I know I've moaned before about over gassy beer but there just seems no logical reason for it in the brewery where it is brewed. Re Nick's comment on Bay. anstich, I've come to the conclusion that it a state of mind - some brewers seem to think that they should dispense with CO2, some don't (note: discuss with Juergen tomorrow!). Tonight is a bit cold for keller visiting so staying home and watching tennis! |
