Surfsticks have hardly anything to do with smartphones per se, and aren't used with them because they wouldn't be necessary. A smartphone already has wireless 3G capability built-in; all that's necessary is a SIM card with a data plan and you're good to go. Surfsticks are, in essence, a SIM card plus necessary supporting circuitry to form a wireless 3G USB interface. They are intended for those who travel with laptops or netbooks that don't have 3G capability built in, but do have USB ports. A typical surfstick looks more or less like a generic memory stick in form. Included with the surfstick is the software that the computer uses to connect the surfstick and start up the wireless internet connection. I have one at home that I bought last year at a Tchibo, but haven't used it since I got back, and probably won't be able to use any passwords I assigned to it. Oh well, I guess I'll just buy another one. For 30 euro, it's a pretty good deal for three weeks of internet nearly anywhere in Germany. |
