Double IPA

I used to assume the same as you, that they meant the same thing, but then I read somewhere that DIPA means double the hops whereas IIPA means imperial in the original imperial stout sense. I assumed I had just been behind the times in thinking they were the same. Now googling again, I can't find anything about a double IPA being just double the hops, not the strength. Did I dream it?
