Eichhorn Dörfleins and Eichhorn Förchheim? |

| Don't know anything about the history of the Forchheimer Eichhorn, but the Dörfleinser (richtige Deklination?) Eichhorn was originally the "Schwarzer Adler" (Black Eagle), hence the eagle in the coat of arms. "Eichhorn" means "squirrel" (as well as sometimes a sort of big moth?), and is also a surname. Aha: the Annafest website < http://www.annafest.eu/12_brauereien.html > has a pretty detailed history of the four current Forchheimer breweries, and says: "Der jetzige Name der Brauerei Eichhorn stammt vom Gasthof Eichhorn seiner Ehefrau in der Vogelstraße in Forchheim." The current name of the Eichhorn brewery originated from his wife's Gasthof Eichhorn in Vogelstraße in Forchheim. "His" here is Konrad Greif, the grandfather of the current Konrad Greif of Brauerei Greif, who bought the brewery in 1935 from the descendants of a young brewer in Erlangen (!) who in turn had bought it a century earlier. And the most excellent resource < http://www.bierfranken.eu/brauerei-detail.php?id=17 > has even more info. "As Konrad Greif's ancestors were looking for a name for their brewery, they ran into the problem that there was already a Greif brewery in the "King's city" (and still today), and so they decided to use the name of the tavern, the Eichhorn. Both animals are still visible in the coat of arms, the griffin and the squirrel." So the Forchheimer birdie is a griffin, not an eagle. In looking this up, I've already learned more than I would expect to in a whole day normally, and it's only 8.30. Thanks for posing such an unexpectedly interesting question!
