My experience with a Tchibo Surfstick was rather better than yours, but I used mine primarily in Hallstadt and Euskirchen, both towns with good coverage. Naturally, your assumption that it would work better in Bamberg applies as well, considering that Hallstadt is right next door. Consider that we were in two far-apart different bits of the country, and that the surfstick worked equally well in both parts. While in Hallstadt, and before obtaining the surfstick, it was easy enough to walk over the Goldener Adler hotel, and politely ask for the password for their wi-fi access, and sit in the lobby with the netbook or tablet computer. Similarly, the Park Hotel in Euskirchen had free wi-fi in the lobby, and during a stop in Leiden, we were able to go into a Golden Tulip and get temporary wi-fi access as well, very nice for quickly looking something up on Google maps. (Too bad surfsticks and iPads don't yet play together ... unless there's an adapter and app out there I don't know about yet.) But in general, free wi-fi is a very hit-or-miss proposition. We had free wi-fi at a B&B in the Netherlands, no wi-fi at all at our vacation apartment in Hallstadt, and free wi-fi at another vacation apartment in Bischberg. So it goes. Can't comment much on the talk-and-surf SIM card. Interesting option though. Dunno if that would be something from Tchibo, or something scored at a T-Mobile or similar shop. |
