That "Rauchbier" from Gotland is an indigenous style called "Gotlandsdricke," and is something of a smoky version of Finland's sahti. Not only are smoked malts involved, but it's flavored with juniper too. There was a commercial small brewery on the island that brewed and bottled Gotlandsdricke in the 1990s, and I was fortunate enough to be given a bottle back then. The first aromas where strong, funky, aromatic, phenolic ... and then, the first sip, even more of the same. Midway through, though, it was thoroughly pleasing and nearly addictive, and at the end, I was very much wishing that I hadn't just finished the only bottle I was likely ever to get. It appears that the brewery is still (again?) in business, but no longer makes the Gotlandsdricke. It does make another sort of Rauchbier, though, called "Medeltidsöl" ("Middle-ages Ale").
