Sorry, Nick - missed the under 1 kg tag at the top. Might try these people. Thanks for all the detailed information. 3% - that's really low alcohol! There used to be a few low gravity beers sold in the UK but it seems to be a dying fashion. When we worked for Courage, they used to produce a low gravity bitter ale in the ex-George's Brewery in Bristol. Think it was 3.5% - used to be known locally as 'boy's beer'. It wasn't stocked in many pubs by the mid-1980s (we had no demand for it) and it was phased out. I never got to go on a brewery trip to George's (too busy running the pub) but the rumour was that all the beers brewed in Bristol at that time (Director's, Best Bitter and Bitter Ale) were one brew that was simply 'watered down' to the appropriate gravity. Even though I ran a Courage pub, I never liked the beer that much, which is why I campaigned to be allowed to sell John Smith's Bitter (the real stuff, not the keg) and 6X, and was, eventually, the first Courage pub to be allowed that freedom. See, I've always been an agitator! |
