OT: Smithwick's Pale Ale - Amarillo Hops? |

Brewdog is all about the hype and nothing but the hype. The dust-up with CAMRA was certainly planned from the start; Brewdog enjoy playing the "bad boys" who claim CAMRA are useless, old-fashioned, and all that, playing into the current trend of believing CAMRA are against "craft" brewing, whatever that might possibly mean. Idjits. But funny idjits. (Actually they're quite smart.) Their hoppy beer disappoints in the bottle; it ain't bottle-conditioned so I guess it fades quickly, and the IPA in particular just doesn't hold a candle to the casked version which I found in --of all places-- a countryside pub in Wales in 2010. That was a superb IPA, but not really citric or otherwise "American-style". I also had a very nice casked Meantime Pale Ale in Manc once, yes, American-hopped, but the bottled stuff really disappoints. I mention Mallinson's at any opportunity, just because they're so great, so young, and so deserving of praise. Bottle-conditioned, hoppy, and just simply really good. They are distributed within the UK, maybe Barry could indeed find a shipper. There's also a brewer of very, very good American-style IPAs in London, but the name escapes me. Their IPA puts 99% of American-brewed American-style IPAs to shame, actually. Pity that beersofeurope.co.uk don't ship to the continent. A cursory look reveals a number of beers of interest there: Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Fyne Ales Jarl, Great Orme Brewery Celtica Ale, Harviestoun Bitter and Twisted, Oakham Ales Citra(!), Robinsons Old Tom...er...ok. A bit more than just a cursory glance, that was. I'm off in a couple of hours to BarryLand for five days, if Barry were there, I'd bring a bottle of my own Franconian half-IPA, though I don't currently have any bottles that are 100% Amarillo. |
