Well done, Fred - great sacrifice in the name of science! Who knows what tricks the multi-nationals get up to but it would be a surprise to me if it was bottom fermented. Diageo Irelasd certainly has the capability to brew a bottom fermented beer (such as the thousands of gallons of Harp) but that would mean brewing in St. James Gate, Dublin, which would seem to counteract all the blurb about Smithwick's tradition, craft brewing, etc. All this suggests the Kilkenny Brewery, which they market as being 'traditional'. But, I respect your taste buds as you've had a little bit of practice! I'll just have to find some and give it a go. Metalman Pale Ale (oh no, not another - what's wrong with bitter beer?) sounds interesting. Is it really cask conditioned? Would appreciate a report on your Dublin experiences when you've done - particularly on any cask conditioned beers that you find (just can't get over my liking for the real stuff - sorry folks). |
