| Yes, there is a little bit of interest between Goslar and Leipzig. First of all, Wernigerode, not so much for beer, as its very nearby suburb of Hasserode is home to the country's sixth-best-selling beer, now part of the AB!nBev empire as its fine old town. Quedlinburg, a fine old city in its own right, is home to the mildly interesting Lüdde brewpub, also a good place to eat, with overnight accommodation as well. There are a couple of brewpub operations in Halle, but not having personal experience of either, I can offer no recommendations at this time. Otherwise, outside of Leipzig, I am not alone in recommending a visit to the Tahlschänke in Jena's southeatern Wöllnitz suburb for its sour Lichtenhainer Weisse. Jena's Papiermühle brewpub and hotel, out on the far west side of town, has decent beer and I remember the food there to be quite good. Your route back towards NL from Leipzig also has some other places of potential interest, such as Bad Arolsen, with its Brauhaus-Hotel; Soest, another fine old town with its Brauhaus Zwiebel brewpub; Oelde, with its Pott's brewery (pub in the city, disneyland-like complex on the outskirts of town); and Münster, home to Pinkus-Müller's excellent range of beers, served at its own brewpub and at the incomparable Drübbelken just a few steps away. Das Blaue Haus, just up the street from P-M, is a classic students' pub, even if the beer selection is fairly ordinary but not unpleasant (Pils, Kölsch, Alt, Hefeweizen). And then, of course, if you wish, there's always a stop in Düsseldorf's Alstadt for further liquid refreshment. I managed to finally get a taste of the Kürzer Altbier there last month. Rather good actually, but so far, still an evenings-only pub. Either way, your route to Venlo is pretty easily done either directly from Münster or from Düsseldorf. |
