A barrel is really a specific measure but, failing that, in the trade, we used it just to describe the container that draught beer came in. Wooden barrels were a bit irrelevant as, even in my pub days, I think only Wadworth's used them. In Eschawo, there's always at least one place selling zoigl, other than the Hof. On our visit last year, we arrived latish and rushed into town to find Loistl closed. We headed for the Hof and wondered why it was so quiet and then were told, quite rudely, that it was the ruhetag and to get out, even though some people, presumably guests, were happily drinking away. At that point, I made the decision not to bother with the place again. The same night, we found the Weisser Schwann and made friends with Ludwig Lindner and the rest, as they say, is history. Re the aluminium tanks, Anton told me that he (or his father) bought them fairly cheaply some years ago. Apparently, it is always a bit dodgy when it comes to pressure inspections. I understand that he is allowed to keep them but, if the place was sold, a new owner would have to replace them. Similarly, he is allowed to keep open but any new owner would have to spend a fortune modernising (i.e. the height of the entrance door is less than the minimum current legal requirement and you can witness scores of customers being hauled away each night in ambulances as a result). This load of bullshit means that, when Anton decides to call it a day, Zum Roud'n will probably close, as his children are not interested in keeping it going. What a load of crap. |
