Pembrokeshire? That's a bit of a hop from North Yorkshire - and beer opportunities are not so great in my experience. But it's a lovely part of the world. Nick, I've been away for so long that many Manchester pubs are new to me! But I used to drink occasionally in the City Arms decades ago. Then, it was pretty mediocre Tetley's (Warrington) pub. Next door was the Town Hall Tavern, a lovely Victorian saloon-type bar and one of Manchester's few outlets for draught Bass (the real stuff before they started mucking about with it), so the City Arms was usually way down on the list. However, happened to pop into it during a rainstorm whilst visiting Manchester's Christmas market a few years ago (incidentally, as impressive as that in Bamberg) and was most impressed (with the pub not the market). Great beer selection (sorry can't remember what, most were new to me) and a friendly and lively atmosphere. Typical old Northern pub, with several little rooms. Excellent. We're actually flying into MUC from Manchester using Easyjet. We arrive at 21:20, to late to get to Bamberg but we can get to Leipheim, although fairly late, so we'll stay there overnight and maybe fit in a quick one at Hirschbrau before heading out to Bamberg. |
