Updating on a rainy day in Bamberg

Prices in Germany are somewhat variable, if less so than in the USA. Some practices aren't legally viable; stores can't run loss-leaders, for instance. But as far as food prices go, the Aldi down the road from our apartment last September was _cheaper_ than our local supermarket(s) at home, at least for equivalent products. Aldi and Netto (formerly Plus) usually come down on the cheap-ish side, price-wise; bigger places like the Edeka E-Center hypermarkets tend to be a bit more costly. If the local Karstadt didn't have quite what you wanted, I would have still looked around elsewhere, or even made a day out of it by going somewhere else (Nürnberg?) to shop. Bargains, too, are sometimes not on obvious display, or found in unexpected places; a smaller retailer may have gotten in something at a lower wholesale price, for instance. If I'd seen a jacket for €40 that actually fit, and I was feeling a bit under-dressed for the weather, I'd have gone for it in a heartbeat. So it's about US$56? Big deal. At that price, it's cheap comfort, and bonus: a new jacket to take home.
