| Most of it anyway, as I turned dwon the early morning invitation to join Robert Sperber of Beim Binner to light the fire! Got in around 10.30 am to find the 'second' brew cooking nicely, the first having been transferred. I won't go through the days events 'blow-by-blow', as I guess its pretty standard small brewery practice and a lot of time is spent watching and waiting. Robert is probably the most active brewer in Eschawo, apart from himself brewing for Weisser Schwann and, as today, sometimes for Rudi Loistl (and perhaps others). As I said last year, the Eschawo stube use a Munchener/Pilsner mixture malt, usually 70% pilsner but going down to 50/50, as today because Rudi likes a brownish beer. Hallertau perle hops were added towards the end of process - don't ask me the proportion, Robert did explain but my German failed at this point! Most of the stube owners seem to prefer Ireks malt from Kulmbach but Rudi goes up to Weyermann Bamberg to buy his - largely because he reckons they are cheaper than Ireks! Apart from the actual brewing activities, brew day is quite a social affair, with visits from both locals and visitors and lubricated by several seidla of zoigl. One set of visitors included Alan Taykor and party from Portland, USA (some of you may know him?), who is intending to set up a new brewery in that town. He took copious notes, photo's and video and is planning to brew some type of zoigl. Well, that's a snapshot of my day at the Kommunbrauerei, Windischeschenbach. I'm still hoping for a visit to Neuhaus next week. Incidentally, completed my inventory of open Eschawo stube with a visit to Fiedlschneider - nice little place, but very quiet when we got in at 10 pm last night - locals probably still exhausted from Himmelsfahrt/Vater Tag activities of previous day. Lightish zoigl (70/30) and a bit too much Co2 present for my tastes. |
