Cucumbers: what are the recommendations? |

I don't see why places you know well couldn't also fall victim to random e-coli contaminated vegetables. Earlier on in the week, it was reported that cucumbers from various sources were similarly contaminated, suggesting that it happened at a trading point or somewhere in transport. And then they reported the astonishing number of contaminated cucumbers actually found in this country with a population the size of California, Oregon, Washington, Florida and New York state all combined in an area the size of Montana: 4. Four cucumbers. And again, now they're saying these weren't even contaminated with the bug that's causing all the problems! I'm still skeptical of the whole thing. Something clearly happened up there in Prussia, but people are over-reacting. Wildly. I wash vegetables not just with water, but also soap, depending on whether the skin is porous or not. And in case anyone's wondering, the two times I've (*) since the first Reagan administration have been the result of migraine attacks, and in one of those cases because of the medicine I took for it. (Yes, I know, real men don't get migraines!) My point is I'm a bit ...er... obsessive about food hygiene myself, having worked in restaurant kitchens in my early years, and yet I'm not worried about this at all. And if everyone else in the world would just do as I do, life would be so much easier.
