Possessive Case
Posted by Nick B. on 2011-03-02 14:34:07
I only learned recently where the English possessive 's originated. "I put Fred's Seidla on the table" would have been "I put Fred his Seidla on the table" back in some earlier time. And just now it occurs to me how similar that sounds to the modern phenomenon of the German Dativ driving out the Genitiv. Proper German with Genitiv: "The dative is the genitive's death" but improper dative: "The dative is to the genitive his (its) death".
