I guess so. Remember, this was in the days when keg beer was king: the book also contains recipes for such delicacies as 'Draught John Courage', 'Tavern Keg'(another Courage brew), 'Double Diamond', 'Watney's Starlight' (the book claims an OG of 1032 - well, I don't ever remember it as strong as that!), 'Whitbread Tankard' and 'Tartan Keg' - does anyone else have the misfortune to remember these? They were all productsof the 'keg revolution' and one of the reasons that CAMRA took off in such a big way. My spouse informs me that demerara sugar is a soft brown sugar used especially for cake making. Again, remember that homebrewing ingredients weren't so easy to come buy in 1980 (no internet!). I suppose that you could just substitute brewing sugar or light malt extract. Be interested in the results if you do give it a try. From memory, the original brew was similar to what we used to call 'boy's bitter' - i.e. a very light bitter beer. Interestingly, the All Nations Tavern (Mrs. Lewis's) near Ironbridge Gorge, which was one of the four remaining original brew pubs at the time, only used to brew a light mild (around 1032 OG), which was similar to this brew. I recall that it was very refreshing and had a kind of 'homebrewed' taste. Incidentally, have you looked at the Brupacks site (www.brupaks.com) - they sell a vast amount of brewing stuff and the site also contains loads of info on brewing. |
