| First, it's a feminine-gender noun: die Schwemme. Same meaning as "watering hole" denotes in English. Second, just to clarify, the Schwemme is a bit more widespread than well-known Bamberg brewery-pubs like Mahrs, Fässla, Schlenkerla, and the like. Uerige and Füchsen in Düsseldorf, Früh and Päffgen in Cologne, just to name a few, have pretty much the same big, open spaces; in Cologne, they're more likely to call it the Schänke, but it's the same thing. FTMP, my only objection to them is that standing is often mandatory, not pleasant for the wife with arthritic knees or me with a sometimes-dodgy lower back. I like the tables in Schlenkerla's Schwemme, though. Then again, there's a lot I like about Schlenkerla in general, besides the Schwemme. |
