Three seidlas from 2010 |

It would be easy to echo Barry's choices, all good, and all enjoyed together, good beer with good company, always an unbeatable combination. There was the added pleasure of enjoying Hönig's lager at the source, Gasthof zur Post in Tiefenellern, chatting with locals while enjoying a Seidla of the lightly smoked lager. Three more choices, then, and all new to me this time 'round: Brauerei Bräutigam, Weisbrunn - lovely house Pils, and the batch sampled late last September was spot-on, beautiful melanoidin-honey malt center, and it's a great locals' pub. Brauerei-Gasthof Düll, Marktbreit (OT Gnodstadt) - a perfect example of locavorism done utterly un-self-consciously; tasty Pils with good bread, kraut, and bratwurst, all very locally sourced without pretension. Highly recommended. Sesslach Kommunbrauerbier at Landgasthof Roter Ochse - I like both the Reinwand and the Roter Ochse in Sesslach, but I'll give "the Red Ox" just a bit of an edge this time. Show up on a day when both are open and compare. Too many "honorable mentions" to count, including Grosch in Rödental, Fössel-Mazour's "Zum Välta" pub in Appendorf, Kundmüller in Weiher, Hartmann in Würgau, and ... on and on it goes. Happy 2011, all! |
