It was "Leikeim Steinbier", from the so-called "Brauhaus Altenkunstadt", another name of Leikeim (Leikeim is the name of the family; Altenkunstadt is a small city 50 kms in the northeast of Bamberg). The brewing with hot stones is a historic method. See a description: http://www.germanbeerinstitute.com/Steinbier.html Granites were made hot with fire from beachwood - about 800 degree Celsius. A part of the malt sugar get to caramel. An image of a basket with hot stones: http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Steinkorb_Steinbier_Leikeim.jpg&filetimestamp=20100425163459 Leikeim has introduced this beer in the year 2007. The have told me that it was a difficult development. Another actual offering of Steinbeers: "Urbankeller", Salzburg http://www.urbankeller.com/steinbier/geschmack Brewed from the Brauhaus Gusswerk http://www.brauhaus-gusswerk.at/ The Rauchenfels-Steinbier-Brauerei Neustadt GmbH in Marktoberdorf has brewed some years a "Rauchenfels Steinbier" and a "Rauchenfels Steinweizen" in Neustadt in the near of Coburg. http://www.bierguru.de/Bierprobe/rauchenfels-steinbier-brauerei_coburg.html But the owner (Sailerbräu in Marktoberdorf) was bought by the Allgäuer Brauhaus, which is since 2003 a part of Radeberger, the greatest German brewery enterprise. The Rauchenfels stonebeers have been top fermented; the Leikeim Steinbier is bottom-fermented. |
