Jos, I think that it's just a marketing ploy. As I'm sure you know, most people who attend beer fests in Britain are not real ale fanatics but simply people looking for an experience and a good time. As for JDW, thank goodness they exiswt but you only have to go in any JDW house to realise that real ale must account for only a minor part of their profitability (falling apparently). This takes us back to the discussion about Drei Kronen and Hartmann - selling tradition can be highly profitable! In UK (and probably rest of world), Oktoberfest has the image of good beer, good time, etc, which is why, I suppose, that Paulaner brand whatever beer is in the bottles with that label, 'Oktoberbier'. Brewing and selling beer is a commercial activity, even for the smallest creft breweries and many, even in Franken, are not afraid to exploit even the slimmest opportunities - viz. Mahrs: the best brewery in the world? I love Mahrs (and specially proper U) but it is definitely not the best.....! |
