Abläutern

Abläutern is a phrase used by brewers sometimes when they go for a pee... Not to mention "austrebern" :-) But more seriously: usually at the start of the lautering, the first wort is being recycled into the lautertun, to give the filterbed (consisting of the spent grains) the chance to settle. After this settling of the filterbed in the lautertun, the wort is clearer, and ready to go forward to the boiling vessel.
