| It's just like English then, where we actually have the same situation for water, beer, and coffee, but modern use has become more flexible. When I looked up Milch http://www.dict.cc/?s=milch , I saw the note about "fachsprachlich" (technical terminology), so probably only people in the dairy business use it. Say it, and they'll think you're a cheesehead! The plural of "water" is mildly interesting to me, because "waters" in the case of the Bible (Genesis) and nautical usage, it translates to "Gewässer", but which also means "bodies of water", which my pupils usually find hilarious.
