Happy to steer the discussion to pubs away from Bamberg... |

Barry's points are all valid and good, and note that his perspective was from staying out in Dörfleins in a very suburban neighborhood. If you're staying in Bamberg, your options work a little better, as you have the trains as well. A quick train ride takes you north to reitengüßbach station, for instance, from which you can walk to the local Hümmer brewery and pub in maybe five minutes; if the weather cooperates, you can also hike down to Kemmern's Wagner-Bräu (tip o' the hat to Barry on this one, it's as good as he recommends) in about 25 minutes. Similarly, a train ride down to Hirschaid station will put you within just a few minutes' walk to the very nice Kraus brewery-pub-hotel. And Zeil am Main also receives a hearty "I second that" two-thumbs-up recommendation, and it's maybe a ten-minute walk from the train station to Göller's fine Gaststätte, with the bonus that Zeil itself is quite pleasant too. And of course, there are some trips that can be planned with both hiking and public transport in mind, particularly of a Saturday. We've already discussed the 5-Seidla-Steig here, and as a Saturday excursion goes, it's simply wonderful, particularly on a late-summer or early-fall day with the weather cooperating nearly flawlessly. |
