How far from Bamberg. |

| This got me curious as to how far I actually was from Bamberg. So I went to www.gcmap.com -- a great circle mapper -- and it turns out that the Bamberg airport has an IATA code (ZCD). So via a great circle route, I am 5880 miles or 9464 km from Bamberg. As I type it probably is a little less since that is from LAX and I am a few miles from the airport here. I thought I'd drunk beer at Schlenkera with somebody farther away than me, but it turns out Tokyo (NRT) is slightly closer at 5776 miles. Since Tokyo and Los Angeles are cover fairly large areas, I'm willing to call it a draw :) I also drank beer at Schlenkerla once with a man from Melbourne, Australia -- which at over 10000 miles would clearly win, but he had been living in London for 2 years so I think that doesn't count. And don't hold your breath waiting for commercial service to ZCD -- the runway is only 1300m long. But the airport was founded in 1912 so it is older than most. |
