Agree with you on Thalys, Nick. I think the last fire was caused by snow melting when the train went into the tunnel and doing something to the electrics(engineering's not my strong point!). Eurostar is generally an excellent service though, and the ICE is possibly higher specification. Guess they need 3 years to test whether its going to burst into flames. As for the fare, even at 60 or 70 euros its easily comparable with flying, especially when you add in the on costs of getting to and from the airports.
