Stuttgart (and Strasbourg)? |

Beer in Stuttgart is nothing super-special; two big-city brands (one of them now owned by InBev), and some modern-style brewpubs to visit at your own risk, unless you're a fan of that underattenuated yeasty stuff. Note that Stuttgart also has a Christmas market, and if you're uninterested in the one in Strasbourg, you'll be equally uninterested in the one in Stuttgart. However, the other side to Stuttgart is that it, like Strasbourg, also has a wine culture. There are vineyards in the city, and it's known for Swabian-style wine taverns, aka "Besenwirtschaften." In addition to Germanic white wines, you may find opportunities to sample hard-to-find German reds like Trollinger, Schwarzriesling, and Lemberger. A worthwhile side trip is to Tübingen, a pretty old town not too far away by train, or to Schwäbisch Hall. Strasbourg has a couple of brewpubs, quite a few places serving rather uninteresting Alsatian lagers from the Kronenbourg industrobeer factory, a good little beer shop, and a few scattered pubs and restaurants with a moderately good selection of French, Belgian, and German beers on offer. If you can get out to Ribeauvillé, I remember the Bar Saint-Ulrich being a worthwhile place to stop in for a drop, with a pretty good list of beers and whisk(e)ys. |
