| So it seems lots of Keller(s) are open already, since the weather's nice. Lieberth's Dorfkeller (Hallerndorf) will open on the 25th at 10:00, and Witzgall will keep to the old tradition of opening on 1 May. There's a fest of sorts in the Forchheimer Kellerwald this weekend to open the new season and crown the new Bierkönigin. Roppelt in Stiebarlimbach opened last weekend, and Sunday was so busy that a kellerbuddy of mine says he didn't even try to get a Maß and sit down, he just biked further along to the Kreuzberg. I did make it on Monday and Friday afternoons though, so I can happily report that Franz's beer is still the hoppy, malty treat that it always has been. So what's so shocking and horrible? Roppelt's unique status as a successful brewer of exactly one (1) beer sort has come to an end. He's begun brewing a Weizenbier that will be on offer soon. He says the demand is just too high to continue to ignore. I always liked the idea of visitors to Stiebarlimbach having only one beer--a fantastic one--available to drink. Don't like it? You have to leave the bloody village to find something else. It was something of an anomoly: Does anyone know of another Franconian brewery that brews only one kind of beer, seasonals included? The only others I can think of are the Kölsch brewers. |
