Did it taste that bad Nick - worse than U from the bottle? I know that there's nothing magical about best buy dates - I only quote them from Hirschbrau to indicate how long a beer bottled with its own natural sediment will remain in good condition. Been there, done that, Jimbo. Tried it one night - drank half a bottle, put stopper back on, re-opened two days later, very little difference. Surely, the logic is that beer, which is not pasteurised or filtered and retains even a little sediment and is still fermenting, will keep on fermenting until all the fermentable material is exhausted. Just how long that is will vary from beer to beer. My argument about Mahrs' U is that, provided the cask is kept reasonably cool (68F - ish? - whatever that is in C), it will in good condition for a day or so. Agree with the points about Ambrosianum - all the best intentions but the most bland beer imaginable (also, the place wants 'dirtying' up a bit - absolutely no character or atmosphere). Didn't even bother going in there on the last visit. Not sure what you meant about new breweries brewing ales, Nick. Do you mean top fermented products?
