Managed to have a couple of glasses this afternoon at the Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach, CA. My memory of the Ur-Bock is nearly 3 months old, but I think I liked it a bit better -- but I don't think I could drink as much, both because of the alcohol and the residual sweetness. It did go really well with BBQ, BTW. It may have been my imagination, but I thought I noticed a bit of tannic astringency. I don't know what burning oak does to its tannins -- do they go "up in smoke" or not? The beachwood they use to smoke the malt is aged (dried) for a few years -- I don't know about the oak and if this would have any effect on the level of smokiness. All in all, I'd say if its available near you its worth trying. Not sure its worth a special trip to Bamberg just for it though. |
