Mike, you could take a look at Ron Pattinson's European Beer Guide - http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/ - for some info on Dortmund, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen, etc, although I'm not sure that he has updated it since originally posting. His energy now seems to go into his blog and his (downloadable) books - Trips! West covers the area you're interested in and is advertised on the European Beer Guide site.
