| One final update before I leave Deutschland today. Yesterday I checked out of my hotel in Bamberg and took a walk to the Bahnhof to buy my train ticket. I knew that waiting until the day of travel to buy the ticket carried the risk of no seat reservations being available on the ICE, and this was the case, though the man at the Reisezentrum said it was because of "technical problems". So, I rode the 15:26 RE to Würzburg in comfort, but at Würzburg, the ICE to Frankfurt was packed like a Tokyo subway car, and I had to stand the 1.5 hour ride. I even tried to get off the train because on the same platform there was another (larger) ICE to Frankfurt arriving 30 minutes later, but the train was so full of standing passengers that once I got on, I could not get back to the door to get out before we departed. C'est la vie. Made it to Frankfurt, and my hotel, OK. I did manage to have a nice lunch of Breast of Goose at Spezial, and a couple of biers at Schlenkerla before I had to catch my train out of Bamberg. So, a good day overall. :-) Btw, I stopped into the new Best Western hotel in Bamberg (difficult to find the entrance), just to take a look. The lobby and reception look very nice, and there are, indeed, a couple of computers there for free use of the internet by hotel guests. Definitely a competitor for the Ibis. Cheers! |
